Festival has events, activities for kids of all ages
Want a creative, educational, outdoor, and interactive weekend that's fun for the entire family? You've got it at the Festival of Books!
There are activities designed for children of all ages, from live theater to the circus to science experiments and more. Come meet children's authors and characters from your favorite books. Teenagers can discover their ?inner author or put their artistic talents to use. There will be live music, local food and lots of interactive opportunities for the entire family to enjoy all on The University of Arizona Mall.
Here's a late-breaking addition to the BIO5's Science Pavilion just for kids join KOLD meteorologists to conduct science experiments on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. You never know what you might discover . . . the possibilities are endless. Check out the kids and youth activities.
Parking info and tips
Parking at the Festival is free. Six University of Arizona parking garages and the campus surface parking are available.
If you're coming from south of campus, try the Sixth Street Garage. If you're coming from the north, try the Highland Avenue Garage (take a short walk under the underpass). If you're coming from the west, try the Tyndall Avenue Garage or the Main Gate Garage. If you're coming from the east, try the Cherry Avenue Garage. Get yer programmmm!Ten thousand free Festival special sections from the March 7 Arizona Daily Star are available at the four information booths on the UA Mall and in the UA Bookstore.
The 48-page section includes a handy, pullout pocket-size guide to children's events and author presentations and a coupon in the children's section for a free book for children through eighth grade.
McMurtry, Ossana forced to cancel
Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana will not participate in this weekend's Tucson Festival of Books.
McMurtry has been in the hospital with a "cardiac event" for the past few days and is now home resting, Bill Viner, one of the festival's founders, wrote in an e-mail.
The Oscar-winning "Brokeback Mountain" screenwriters, who live in Tucson at Ossana's home, were scheduled to to be interviewed by Tom Miller on Sunday.
McMurtry won the Pulitzer Prize for his 1985 novel "Lonesome Dove," which was turned into a 1989 CBS miniseries that won the Golden Globe for best miniseries or TV movie.
The Festival site's blog includes a daily update on cancellations, additions and other changes.
'Mrs. Green Goes Mainstream' show at the FestivalJoin "Mrs. Green Goes Mainstream" during a live remote broadcast by KNST 790 Saturday at noon at the festival.
The radio talk show is hosted by Gina Murphy-Darling. She will interviews Mireya Navarro, an environmental writer for the New York Times and author of "Green Wedding: Planning Your Eco-friendly Celebration," and Vanessa Farquharson, a Toronto-based arts reporter and environment columnist, blogger and author of "Sleeping Naked is Green: How an Eco-cynic Unplugged her Fridge, Sold her Car, and Found Love in 366 Days."
Later on Saturday, Murphy-Darling will moderate the panel "Living the Green and Sustainable Lifestyle with Mrs. Green" at 2:30 at the Integrated Learning Center - Room 150 with Farquharson, Navarro and Novella Carpenter.
